WARSAW, Poland (AP) — Austria beat Poland 2-0 on Tuesday to register their first win at Euro 2024. The victory boosted Austria's hopes of reaching the last 16 while leaving Poland's chances hanging in the balance.
Poland started brightly and had the better of the first half, but Austria grew into the game and took the lead through Marko Arnautovic in the 65th minute. Xaver Schlager added a second in the 83rd minute to seal the win.
The result leaves Austria in second place in Group C with three points, behind leaders Ukraine who have four points. Poland is now bottom of the group with one point and faces an uphill battle to qualify for the knockout stages.
Austria will now face Ukraine in their final group game on Sunday, while Poland will take on North Macedonia. Only the top two teams in each group will advance to the knockout stages.
