Daniel Murphy Announces Retirement

Former All-Star and World Series Champion Calls it a Career

Murphy enjoyed a successful 12-year MLB career, most notably with the New York Mets and Washington Nationals.

Daniel Thomas Murphy, born April 1, 1985, has announced his retirement from professional baseball.

Murphy, a former All-Star and World Series champion, played 12 seasons in Major League Baseball. He spent the majority of his career with the New York Mets and Washington Nationals, where he established himself as a reliable hitter and a valuable infielder.

Over his career, Murphy compiled a batting average of .297 with 123 home runs and 616 RBIs. He was also known for his exceptional defense, winning two Gold Glove Awards at second base.

Murphy's most memorable season came in 2015 with the Mets. He hit .319 with 14 home runs and 66 RBIs, helping the team reach the World Series. The following year, he signed with the Nationals and enjoyed his best season ever. He finished with a .347 batting average, 25 home runs, and 104 RBIs, earning an All-Star selection and finishing seventh in the NL MVP voting.

In recent years, Murphy's production declined, and he signed a minor league deal with the Los Angeles Angels in 2023. However, he never made it back to the majors and has now decided to retire from the game.
