Barnsdall Tornado Leaves One Dead, Community Devastated
Unidentified Person Killed in Storm
A confirmed large and destructive tornado ripped through the city of Barnsdall, Oklahoma, Monday night, leaving one person dead and causing widespread damage to homes and businesses. WEB Osage County Sheriff Eddie Virden told NBC News that the unidentified person died as a result of injuries sustained in the tornado.
Community in Need of Prayers
The tight-knit community of Barnsdall is reeling from the impact of the tornado, which tore a path of destruction through the city. During an initial search Monday night after the storm, about 25 people were rescued, including children. The community is now asking for prayers and support as they begin the long process of recovery.
Tornado Occurred Due to Unique Weather Conditions
Meteorologists say the Barnsdall tornado was able to occur because it was a lone discrete supercell ahead of the line of storms that moved through the region. It appears that temperatures did not fall as quickly as expected, allowing the supercell to maintain its intensity as it moved through Barnsdall.
